Ellen has two grown sons. One, an architect, lives in New Orleans with his wife who practices and teaches anesthesia at Tulane. The other writes a bi-weekly political column for the The C-ville Weekly, a local Charlottesville newspaper. He lives in New York with his wife, an art history professor at SUNY Purchase. Ellen lives in downtown Charlottesville and can often be seen on the Downtown Mall with her ShihTsu/Pom Rosie.
